LGS Treatment Options

There are treatments to help reduce the strength and/or number of seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). Patients with LGS often experience many different seizure types. LGS treatments often include:

Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs)

AEDs are often used to treat seizures associated LGS.1 BANZEL (rufinamide) is a prescription medication approved for adjunctive treatment of seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) in pediatric patients 1 year of age and older, and in adults.

Diet and other therapies

Seizures associated with LGS are hard to control. A combination of therapies may be a part of the treatment plan. Some of these may include:

The ketogenic diet

This is a special high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet. It can reduce seizures in some people with epilepsy. The diet makes the body burn fat instead of glucose for energy.2

Be sure to speak with your doctor before starting this option. He or she will take your child’s specific needs into account and help you monitor the effectiveness of the diet.

Side effects of the diet can be serious. Dehydration, renal stones, cardiac abnormalities, and abnormal lipid profile may occur.3

Check with your healthcare team to see if these options are right for your loved one. It is important to consider all the treatments available. Please learn as much as possible. Find out more about these treatments through our Helpful Links.
